City Plan Commission approves Nemak expansion

Nemak's manufacturing facility is located at 4243 Gateway Drive in the Sheboygan Business Park.

SHEBOYGAN – The Sheboygan City Plan Commission has approved a conditional use permit for a 49,500-square-foot expansion of Nemak's manufacturing facility at 4243 Gateway Drive in Sheboygan. The approval came at the Commission's meeting at City Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The addition will be located on the north side of the existing facility, with 35,300 square feet dedicated to a diecasting production area with storage. The space will accommodate two 4,500-ton diecast machines and auxiliary equipment.

The expansion will also include a connector for the transport of molten aluminum from the existing furnaces to the new diecast machines, office space, an electrical building, compressor room and dock area.

Construction will cost approximately $18 million, and will begin in June of this year with an estimated completion date of September 2024.

Work will be done in three phases. The first will include construction of the production area and necessary support spaces, including electrical, plumbing and the compressor room. The second will include office space and potentially one more machine. The third and final phase will include two more machines and interior storage for tools.

As part of the addition, access off Behrens Parkway will be widened and improved with a security gate and truck scale. This will become the primary point of entry and exit for trucks. The current truck access at the north end of Gateway Drive will remain the same.

The expansion is expected to create additional jobs, but the number has yet to be determined. Nemak currently employs 900 people at the Sheboygan plant.

Nemak is a leading provider of lightweighting solutions for the global automotive industry, specializing in the development and manufacturing of aluminum components for e-mobility, structure and chassis, and ICE powertrain applications.

As the auto industry transitions from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, larger diecast machines are required to produce components. Nemak's addition of these machines will help ensure the company's long-term sustainability and future growth in Sheboygan.
